Looking out the window....

As Matt sat in his home office today, he paused for a minute to look out the window. He then screamed out loud in complete terror, "What is that Monster outside! It's Ginormous!"

It turns out it wasn't a monster at all, it was just a Pileated Woodpecker (or Dryocopus pileatus for you bird enthusiasts). It is one of the largest woodpeckers in North America at 16-19" long with a wingspan of 26-30" and weighs in at 250-350 g. So no wonder Matt was so scared-- That's one BIG woodpecker!


One more interesting fact - Did you know that the famous Woody Woodpecker was based on the Pileated Woodpecker?

Poor me, I didn't see it. All I see out my window at work is buildings and Lake Ontario.
